In my previous life, I was a grad school business communications professor and donut shop cashier, though not at the same time. I currently channel my skills and areas of expertise into writing, editing, and training for clients who need to communicate effectively, with power and accuracy. Start-ups. Little guys. Big companies. Individuals. Nonprofits. Schools. Foundations. You.For various reasons* I, a proud, native Los Angeleno (who also passed 16+ years on Cali’s central coast) relocated to Portland’s Concordia neighborhood over five years ago only to immediately consider Stumptown home. I continue to marvel at how unbelievably easy it was to seamlessly dive into vibrant community involvement of all types — from joining various neighborhood associations editorial forces, the Art on Alberta board, and the Flash Choir, to riding my cruiser while sporting an electric blue wig, leopard print coat, and flowing purple boa, an act attracting exactly ZERO attention. (Read: refreshing.)
After exhausting the limits of oh-so-practical degrees in French literature, philosophy, and linguistics, teaching undergrads and grads, and launching an art gallery, I now spend billable hours writing and editing for a variety of clients. My specialties include training professionals in communication skills, with a focus on business writing and public speaking. Additionally, I might just fancy myself a reasonably successful worm rancher, reporter, and flower arranger, and am obsessed with discovering apostrophe and quotation “mark’s usage violations”.
*My old-timer hound is a convicted felon in at least one state. A college buddy has pressured me to follow her to every city she has inhabited for the last 25 years, and this harassment needed to cease. I wanted to live in a four-season climate rather than mold over in consistent, persistent, drippy, cold fog.
